Default DAC help

hey guys,

just a little bit about myself and why i am here. im very much an audio fan and very much into car audio. my latest install is again all out pure SQ but i have been having trouble with my source, in that for me to get what i want im having to fork out mega bucks (eg think Alpine A/V @ 4k as where i may start) and being a uni student i just cant afford that.

So i figured i could do something thats a little different and use a carputer. that way i have lots of processing power, have lots of EQ and x-over to play with (i want to run 5.1 eventually) etc etc.

Now for me to keep inline with the rest of my system the available soundcards just dont cut it so i've decided to run with an external DAC. except an external DAC that is of high sound quality and with enough outputs for what i want to do (i have 3-way fronts + sub, then will look @ putting in rear and centre channel later) just doesnt seem to exist in the car audio area.

so i guess i have two choices

i could DIY something (i wont be able to design my own DAC but i reckon i could possible put one together after i learn how to solder properly and all that good stuff) so something of the kit form would be nice.

or i could purchase a home audio DAC. but seeing as i know nothing about home audio gear could one of u guys point me in the right direction (like point out something thats suitable or point me in the direction of a decent forum or something where i can ask?)

so wat i would love to be able to do is to learn my way around a DAC, what each component is and does. is there some sort of online tutorial that i can have a read of so i can familiarise myself with DAC's? i am a complete noob.

cheers guys
