CD 650 Mods for dummies

Hi,

I have a Philips/Magnavox CD 650 at home which is working like a charm. Recently I upgraded to a Meridian G07 and now I'd like to see if I can diy the 650 into a better player. However, I do not have 1/10th of the abilities as the avergae forumvisitor.

Could someone explain to me (in not so technical language) what steps I can take to improve the sound of that old 650?

Hi

I am not familiar with this player but as with most CDP upgrading the voltage rails with better regs ,op amps etc works a treat.
Get a copy of the service manual and post it on here and we can have a look to see whats involed.

There are a lot of low cost mods that can bring better sound from any CDP

Hi there,

the usual tricks people do are:
1) convert it to Non-oversampling no-fliter (if you like that sound)
2) better capacitors (power supply and audio path)
3) better clock
4) damping the case and transport
5) better op amps or change to tube output or transformer output
6) add voltage regulation
7) unplug the earphone circuit from loading the power supply
8) Walt Jung's POOGE articles series
9) change the output to DC servo, DC coupled to avoid capacitors altogether.

basically the possibilities are endless. Depends on how much you want to spend.

I have one stock and one with some mods on it already.

Wish I could get the entire service manual then I would document all the tweaks and make them available.

Thanks for the tips. I also do not have the manual anymore (I bought the player '87..), but still, and I am sorry for my ignorance, it is difficult for me to analyse what to do in practise. E.g. disconnect the power supply from the headphone out; where do I disconnect what? And the capacitators (something I think conceptually would really work) which do I get, sorry, how do I change them..?

Service manual is available from www.schaltungsdienst.de for about 10 euro + postage. Has all schematics, pcb layouts, adjustment procedures etc.

for that lead on the service manual. I'll certainly consider it.

Nice to be able to exchange with people like yourself who have written so much good material and shared it with the DIY community.

Are you working on anything these days that will "be shared" ?
