Default Philips CD104 earthing fault

I have an old CD104 that has a strange fault. When connected up normally to the mains and amp there is no sound output. I therefore wrote it off as faulty (it was several years old). However I later accidentally discovered that by connecting an earth (or ground) wire from the case to an external ground point (I use the earth point on my Audiolab amp) it plays fine. I have read through various service manuals and this site but cannot fathom this odd fault out. I now want to sell the unit, so really was looking to return it to it's original condition (without a bit of wire hanging off one of the case screws!). Any suggestions

There are a wide variety of faults that can occur with this player that relate to earthing arrangements on the decoder and servo boards. Search this forum for the word griplet and you should find a few threads which describe the reccomended procedure to fix them.
