Which universal player to modify?

Hi all,

I am looking to get a new universal dvd-player (with SACD, DVD-A and HDMI) and modify it for better sound/picture.

As always, the money are a problem.

That is why my researches indicated, so far, that the top candidates should be IN ORDER:

1. Samsung DVD-HD941 $105
2. Toshiba SD-6980 $150
3. Pioneer DV-79AVi $720
4. Yamaha DVD-S2500 $500
5. Denon DVD-2910 $510
6. Denon DVD-3910 $890
7. Denon DVD-1920 $280

The buget for parts is limited to US$250 / 200 EUR.

From your experience and in your opinion, which will offer the BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK after modifications? (not the best sound overall, but rather the best quality/price ratio).

Apart from things like PSU type and AD converters etc there also issues regarding operation of these thingies.

If you want to use it for SACD on a regular basis then go for one that allows convenient change af playback mode (CD, 2CH and 6 CH SACD). I don't know how this particular Samsung behaves but with the older HD 945 you had to switch on your TV and fight your way through the setup menu in order to play a hybrid SACD as SACD. Even worse: It plays a stereo downmix instead of the 2 channel content as its default setting !

One reasonably priced player that allows easy change of SACD playback mode is the Yamaha DVD-S657.
