Chaintech AV-710 = Hercules Fortissimo IV?

I wasted a few hours trying to source the AV-710 in Europe. Finally got an email from Chaintech France saying 'not available in Europe'.

Was just about to order an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 as the cheapest card with good sp/dif out and a decent dac then spotted the Hercules on Ebuyer:

* Record audio up to 24-bit 96KHz
* Playback audio up to 24-bit 96 & 192 KHz on 8 channels
* Optical SPDIF digital output
* High definition components
* Via® Envy24 HT audio controller
* Wolfson DAC and Codec

Does seem similar if not identical.

I'm now in a quandry, do I get the £34 Hercules or the £55 M-Audio Audiophile 2496? I'm not a gamer, just interested in the best audio until I can afford a good external dac.

Both cards use the VIA ENVY-24 HT chipset so the Hercules should be fine.

I plan to get one of these and modify it with external DACs by tapping the I2S lines that go to the onboard DACs on this card. Even unmodified its a good card - those Wolfson DACs are not bad.
