Default CS1812/14 SEL Pin -- why high?

Ever schematic I can find for a NOS DAC using a CS8412 and a TDA1541A has SEL high. Is there a reason for this, or has everyone just copied? Leaving it low would allow retreiving the input frequency which I would like to do. Having it high seems to control the C), Ca, Cb, Cc, Cd, and Ce pins, but no one seems to use those? Is there any other reason?
