Default Books for DAC design for beginners?

I'm very interested in learning how DAC's work (crystals, DAC chips, receivers, etc), so I can eventually DIY one for myself. I've built speakers before, and learned how to do that mostly from books. Are there any good (i.e. practical) books about DAC design, with information about using real-world chips and such? How do you guys know how to do all this? Is it because you come from EE backgrounds mostly, or did you just pick it up some other way? I was trained as a biomedical engineer, so I understand basic circuit theory, but that's about it. Thanks!

Guess there aren't too many books, then? I've downloaded manuals for two evaluation boards (AD1853 and WM8740), and hope that this will get me started.

In 1986 Analog Devices published an excellent book called "Analog-Digital Conversion Handbook" that covers all the fundamentals. See if you can get a copy.

Thanks! It looks like there is also a recent successor to that book, called "The Data Conversion Handbook". This is what I needed, well, wanted.
