Im suprised no-one else answered you query.
To my mind, everything Nakamichi made (makes) is first rate. Im not familiar with the model AV3S - if it is an early home theater receiver, it might not be worth much. I would say; if it has phono inputs, grab it! Their cassette decks were the undisputed state-of-the-art in the 80s. I still have 2 and wont part with them. Jess |

Hi JesseG,
I was authorized warranty for Nakamichi until I sold my shop. I am not familiar with the AV3S so I didn't comment. I was not happy with the quality of the recievers after the stassis series (TA-2 ~4). However, they may be better still than others out there. Lifestyle, who needs it? That's where they were going. I imagine it will sound good, being a Nakamichi. -Chris |

As you say, they changed their style somewhat in the early-mid '90s. I guess the marketing guys got hold of the place :0( However during the '80s they were the yardstick for how good Japaneese audio could be IMHO. BTW: with your background in Nak service, do you know much about the BX-2 ctd? I have a drive problem (i'm sure it is mechanical) in the tape take-up spindle on mine and since no-one will officially service them any more, I will have to FYI (fix it your {my} self). Then again, that's what this website is all about, isn't it? Anyway, I am not afraid of getting into the transport to do a repair, I would just like to know what to look for. Jess
