The thrift-store-find Magnavox 484 CD changer (Model CDB484 BK01) [a Philips ???] displays "ERR" when trying to access track 1 on each of the six CD's loaded in the magazine. Fully searched this and other forums and got some ideas, but nothing definitive.
Suspect the CDM 4/20 not reading the CD TOC (or anything else). I've wiped the lens with isopropyl. Laser shot? All else appears to be in excellent condition, though a little dusty. I'm not a techie, only have a digital VOM, but am unafraid of trying... Is there an upgrade CDM ?/?? that would fit this machine? Any other suggestions? (BTW, since it didn't work and no remote, it was 'free.') Thanks. |

Does the CD spin to read toc?
Check the electrolytic cap on the laser supply, typically 33 mfd or 47 mfd below mech. Search the forum, there are plenty posts about this and cct diagrams as well. Doubt there is an upgrade laser for cdm4... I think lasers are identical between cdm4 variants, the /20 etc refers to the block type (plastic or alloy and there are different shapes) that laser and spindle motor sit on as well as motor type, magnetic spindle or not etc.... |

Thanks, tubenut, for the leads.
To answer your question, the spindle motor just bumps the CD around while the laser arm moves toward the periphery. "ERR" immediately is displayed. Same results without a CD in a magazine slot. The caps all look (?) good: 33 uF and 220 uF. I'll keep looking.
