how long do you want the cable? If you need 10 meters, just use a longer USB cable or use extension cables and see if it still works.

If you need 100 metres, USB will definitely not work and you should look at using something like a PAL/NTSC video camera, a long length of good 75 ohm video cable (RG-59 or RG-6) and a USB video capture device instead.

Making USB wireless is almost impossible for a DIY project.

hi Gmarsh
i hooked up a 5mtr cable to webcam.so effective length=5.8mtrs.but on the flip side, the cam hanged a lot.again n again,it became offline(USB standard permits max 5mtrs and is sensitive to cable resistance).
i hooked another two mtrs,it stoped working!

i need atleast 25 mtrs.

i have seen very cheap but very good NTSC, PAl cams(wireless and have automatic switching b/w infra red and visible light capture).but how to connect them to my pc?i have a pixel view tv tuner card in pc,but the video size from it is .

i had in mind to use the above cam(it has tv a/v i/p and is wireless),give its i/p into pc tuner card,is it possible?
how can the video size be compressed dynamically(from tv tuner)?

webcam captures video at 1mb/min in 800*600 res.i modified it for night vision.how to make powered USB HUB to strech the wire to 30mtrs or so?

theres a box called "usb extender" you can get that connects usb at both ends via cat5 cable.

http://www.networktechinc.com/usbc5.htm

maybe you can build something like that (or find on ebay). its brobably just line drivers/buffers inside.

and why is the reason that USB only works for certain distance? it must be the electrical properties of a normal USB cable, such as noise sheilding, resistance and capacitance etc. maybe you could just use a different kind of wire and extend it that way. it might be worth trying anyways.

the prob is USB specification which permits only 5mtrs,reason being sensitivity to cable resistance.

usb extenders r available,i.e powered USB hubs, but they r way beyond my budget.
