Pioneer DVL-919 no disc message for CD/LD only

OK tech gurus, here is my plea for help. I am fairly competent with analog projects, but this is my first foray into the digital world.

My DVL-919 recently stopped recognizing CDs and LDs. DVDs are usually recognized, although sometimes I get problems unless I turn the unit off with the disc I want to play in the tray. On power up, it usually recognizes a DVD.

I understand that this probably means the laser head is dead. I think that this unit has separate heads for CD/LD and DVD.

Question 1 - the first sign of any problem occurred after moving the player. Do I have any real hope that a connector came loose or something easy like that?

Question 2 - Is laser head replacement a suitable project for an advanced intermediate hobbyist or will alignment require expensive special tools? Where might I find the parts? Should I just replace the DVD head while I am at it? (assuming that they are physically separate)
