Default Digital IC

Sorry if this is in the wrong section (please move if it is).

Ive been wondering about digital I/C's that claim to be 75ohm. What does the 75 ohm relate too coz Ive never measured it on a cable?? Secondly, why 75 ohms and why is it needed?? I mean, should the resistance on the signal be 75 ohm?? in that case why not use a resitor??

Im a tad confused, please help me.
