Hi.
Very new to this, but I have had from new a Philips cd 104 the sound of which I love, problem is recently the old girl does not want to play cd's all the way through, as the track numbers reach double figures, it starts to jump and miss parts of the track. Almost seems to me that it needs some lube in the mechanism, but having never had the bonnet up to look inside I am a bit reticent, any ideas? Cheers. |

maybe.
Opening the bonet on these players is not too hard as long as you have the right torx driver. I bought a cheap set which included a few torx bits in a yellow plastic handle for around £3. Once open you'll see more boards and ribbon cables than you'd find in an average PC. I think the transport can be accessed from underneath by taking the bottom plate off. Not sure if it's a lube question, there are some threads in this forum on both the CD104 (and derivatives - B & O CDX) which explore tracking issues. Usually people have the one where the player doesn't read the TOC untill it's been on for a while, which is fixed by resoldering the solder blobs/ricvets which link both sides of the boards (marked with little x's) I recall a thread which also explores adjusting the output power of the laser but thats more drastic. You could try examining the transport to see if there are any foreign bodies fouling the laser head (a hair etc, mine was filthy inside) and cleaning the lens while you are in there. Funnily enough mine will happily play 80 minute CD's that newer players won't ! Worth investigating as the 104 sounds great , mine is as shipped apart from swapping some caps and removing the DC filters (my preamp does this) |
