I am sure with a little perseverance you can get it to work. M-audio help line is quite slow to respond.
The m-audio stuff is capable of quite a bit more than is clearly documented in their manuals.
You will probably have the same exact issues with the USB version - I had a lot of issues with it as well as choppy audio playback anytime any other usb device wanted to use the bus.
Firewire has more bandwidth practically speaking and fewer latency issues than the microsoft implementation of usb.
