It appears the common DIY method is to use gobs of solder to hold the chip down and then remove the excess with a solder sucker and/or solder braid. I guess that works but it seems like a lot of trouble, not to mention excessive heating of the IC. An easier method is demonstrated in two video clips at http://www.howardelectronics.com/nav...ideoclips.html using JBC and Xytronic drag-soldering tips.
I use a JBC 09 tip to tack down one or two IC legs and then a JBC 31 tip to drag solder the remaining legs. With the JBC, it takes less than 10 seconds to change tips and resume soldering. |

Cool video! I thought only metcal had these tips, apparently I was wrong and JBC does a nice job. |

I agree. A Braid never touches my surface mounts... I hate the stuff.
The key to the sucess of this method is LOTS of flux, not so much solder. That way you don't get solder bridges between pins.
