I’m looking for nice schematics for a preamp with 5.1 decoder Dolbydigital/DTS and a digital input.
I’m going to build 5 nice poweramps for my cinema. Regard Progg70 |

Thanks!
Interesting reading but I can’t get the red tread for the project. I need something more concrete like a full schematic and a good list for parts now it’s too theoretical I think. regard Progg70 |

I have been trying to follow this thread, but after all is said and done I still can't see why I would go for one of these say compared to the creative decoder which can be had for $100+
What features sets your plan appart from these types of units? Except the LCD pannels? What do you think your total DIY kit is going to come down to in dollars? Or is this merely an excersise to see if this can be done on an advanced DIY basis? |

Well, today you can buy a cheap DVD-player with decoders for 200$ in Sweden.
Perhaps you can use one of these and take de decoder. I like to build and have my look on things. Then usually you can have benefits to build your self, the companies’ need there part of money. Especially in the power supply area you can get out better then commercial P because the copper is like gold and so on… And off course it’s nice to build things that the family can use and they say “daddy have built that”. regard Progg70 |

Good luck, you won't find anything DIY with DD or DTS. Both require licensing to use, though you can get around the DD issues by looking for AC52. Most of what you'd find with that all use a full blown computer and sound cards. If you're lucky you'll find a small handful of chips on some manufacturers websites that'll do the decode, but you either can't get the chips or they don't come with the software on the chip, but in a separate memory chip. Oh, and doing a search before posting would have pointed you at two or three threads that would have told you all of this. (It comes up every so often) |

Your best bet is to get a used Technics SH-AC500. Remote volume control and source switching, up to 4 digital ins, DD and DTS, and analog pass-through.
Or buy a used DD/DTS receiver with busted power amps and add RCA outs. |

I was thinking along the same lines of using older/cheaper newer equipment and modding it. The trick is to start off with something worth modding first.
Does anyone have any recommendations for receivers with good potential? Or known good decoding chips and board layouts of the receiver. These receivers should switch video and have prempp level outputs. The amp stages should be guttable to make space for additional power supplies and other mods. Alas I fear most lower priced ( maybe all) newer units are SMD. A bonus with this route would be a remote control capability. |

5.1 surround chips arent that easy to get, even if u get ur hands on something like STA310 it wont be that easy a job to control it through mcu unless u have advanced programming skills and making pcb of the quality that could accomodate STA310 and then solder it to that board, you'd be better off with DVD player.
