Here's a project I started to add a S/PDIF output to the Sonos ZonePlayer ZP100. The Sonos is a cute digital audio player that can read music off your network and play it back on your sound system. Unfortunately it has only analog line-level and amplified outputs. I am in the middle of adding the S/PDIF port.
Here's the Sonos during disassembly. The build quality is admirable. The bit hanging off the side is the 802.11b/g radio. This is the main audio board. There's a TI DSP that handles compressed audio formats, equalization, digital volume control, and drives the outputs. The amplifier is a Tripath TC2000 PWM thing. The line-level output (and input) is handled by the CS42416 near the lower left in the photo. Probe me harder. The CS42416 has the same 3-wire serial port as every other chip.

I didn't even listen to it before I started working, in fact.

It gives the impression that sound quality is less important than features
Good luck with it. Jean-Paul

The Sonos uses a variation of the Tripath 50 W TK2050. Would it be possible to upgrade the chip to the 70 w TK2070 version?

actually, being that im an audio dealer, ive sold a few sonos systems in my time. they arent meant for high fidelity, but great for whole-house audio distribution. but that said, they do sound pretty decent.
im really excited to see this thread! i would LOVE to be able to add a digital out on one of these, or simply a line-level fixed out. it sucks only having variable out... let me know what you find. |
