I have the Diyaudiocraft kit, it seemed a good bet to try different things out - single vs. parallel TDA1541A's, tube configurations etc.

I'm not going to use SPDIF - will be using a CD-Pro2M drive (and Tent clock) and connecting via I2S to the DAC.

I would have thought that as the DA12 is a sought after piece of kit, it would be better to sell it and build a NOS DAC either from scratch or as a kit.

Modifying the DA12, would need quite a bit or work to do properly - new filter, improved I/V and output buffer etc. And it still might not end up as good as the NOS DAC kits out there.
