Default What DIY CD-Player Kit?

Hi Everybody,
After nearly finishing my Petit Filou speker project I am looking for another adventure.
On another thread I have started a discussion on Pure Digital Amps, however I am also keen on building a CD-Player. There are numerous kits discussed on these pages, however I find it difficult to decipher pros and cons.

I know programming very well (have worked with C, C++, C# JAVA, Perl, PHP). So programming PIC in C really does not seem to difficult, this is however my first hardware project so starting completely from scratch is a bit too much for me.

I am looking for a kit with excellent audio preformance, SPPDIF out would be nice and I2S is a must. A DAC would not be necessary.

I have seen kits on these pages using a normal Cd-rom, I don't know about the sound quality of these though.

I have also read about the CD-PRO2M, which seems like a good alternative. I really want a kit for which I can program and change the Firmware using C programming.
I don't care about cases and chassis. A PSU and LED would be good. Remote control ability is a definite plus.

In short a flexibility high uqality kit which allows for firmware tinkering is what I am after. Any ideas???

Do these Kits come with C source code which can be modified? If I were to inegrate an amplifier with the CD would it be possible to use the existing PIC?

http://www.daisy-laser.com/products/.../downloads.htm will tell you all you need to know. The Premium 10501-DSA specification and application notes cover the use of the configuration interface.

This might also help. CDPRO2 Group Project (open source project)

Hi Again,
Sorry this question might be stupid but I'm moving into unfamiliar territory. I had a look at the C code BrianGT supplied, and it was a joy for the eye, seems very nice to work with. But, he uses the PIC18F452 microcontroller, does the CD-PRO2M come with a Microcontroller, or do I need to get one separately? I would like a microcontroller which would enable me to build an integrated amp Cd-Player.

Was my question too stupid for answering?

Sorry, preoccupied with getting home and ebay.
Let me first say there others better placed to comment on this but here goes.
It comes with an interface through which it is controlled. It is entirely up to the end user to determine how to control the module. You can use a PC parallel port or an 12FXXX, the DSA i/f doesn't care. The choice of microcontroller is completely up to you as is the display and control surface.

Thanks a lot rfbrw!
Ok, things are getting a lot clearer. Will start learning more on PIC microcontrollers, writing Firmware sure seems like something fun to work with.

Thanks Again!
