Default Newbie Question

Hello, I have a pretty dumb as a newbie, but I need to know, what the difference is from Input and Output. I was looking at both the M-Audio Firewire 410 and the Presonus Firepod, and they are both very nice, but the F410 has 4 Inputs and 10 outputs. Does this mean I could plug in 4 different things that can be sent to my computer, or ten. This is where I'm confused.
