I've seen this in many PC cd-roms. It is usually linked to the faliure of the +5V regulator that's feeding the motor control circuits. Most of the time it isn't repairable because usually the chip that controls the motor is fried and not easy to obtain.

It's a problem that occurs often.
(in my experience) It is always cured with a blanket replacement of electrolytes together with new regulators and a check for dry solderjoints.

You can spend weeks, checking opamps and chips etc,but the above will probably be enough..
Start with checking the soldering. This is cheap and often does the trick.also add a wire between the groundplanes near the microprocessor on the servopcb.

Once again,a working cdm0 or cdm1 is not likely to deteriorate overnight.Uptil now,I have mainly encountered dead lasers in players that had been "modified".
In 12 years of 14bit addiction,I have once (!) seen a player that had certainly worn out it's laser. The rest had been killed by an ESD.
