Question Controlling a CDROM via a parallel port

Hello everyone,

I have been reading the thread on controlling a cdrom via the atpi port but I was wondering if anyone has ever tried the parallel port? I have some external cdrom drive controlers with atpi ports on the inside, but parallel in and out ports on the back, they also have a built in power supply and 3.5mm audio out that I have hooked up to an amp. I am really only looking for back/forward, play, stop, pause, and mabey and display showing track number.

Thanks for any assistance,

John

I think it uses parallel port to emulate some kind of SCSI control protocol. If you know the protocol, it can be done.

That is what I thought. I do know that the parallel port is easier to hack due to there being custom game pads and controlers that can use that port. I just thought it might be easier to add some buttons and an lcd via this older style port than the ide interface.

Anyone have any suggestions? I have two of these cases and was thinking about trying to use them both to make a mini-component system with a hd and cd rom.
