Question Modify Hoer-Wege 1704 DAC

Hi,

I just bought myself a 1704DAC from Hoer-Wege (via Ebay) and I would like to make some PSU modifications.

On the webpage of the PSU I noticed that I have a different version which has a lot less Elcos, 4 2200u and 4 1000u (Philips).

The current PSU uses 12 Panasonic 2200u which seems a lot better to me as it has 13600u more of a better brand (Pana's are very good, right?). This may explain why the power of the mid and bass is a bit lacking...

As my board doesn't have room for 4 extra elcos I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to replace the current ones for bigger to try to make up the 13600u which I'm missing. The other parts seem to have the same ratings as the current PSU so it should be able to handle the increased load.

Or can I better use 8 2200u's because larger ones sound worse? Of course, I could add some extra "bypasses" as well.

The link to the current PSU is:

Don't know how relevant this info is, but with my TDA1543 nonos DAC I found a single Sanyo SEP 330u 16v or Rubycon ZA 220u 35v has better timing and more slam than a single Pansonic FC 3300u 35v.

I use four Rubycon ZA 220u 35v as filtering, each cap separated by a Murata 47uH/1.3R inductor and 16.5R 1W carbon resitance before the first cap (adds smoothness without sucking out power).

I don't use any bypassing myself, as ultimately everything I've tried sounds only different or worse, not better. It's more productive to investigate the right single cap.

Kittaylor,

interesting that bypassing doesn't work for you!

I'll certainly try your suggestion of using smaller caps, if I don't like them I can use them on the DAC part. I already suspected that larger caps can be to slow in this applicatio. It does need some powerfull caps though because the output can be up to 250ma.

I'll keep watching that Blackgate thread for other brand suggestions before ordering.

thanks,

Wanne.
