Hi to all,

I have some questions about marantz cd84.

I see that is like cd74 and other Philips (cd104-304).
For dac it use a TDA1540P x2 and SA7000,10,20,30.
I search into the forum and i have found datasheet for all (thanks).
But I don't know nothing about opamp: my marantz have 4560dd jrc, and I don't know with wich oyher opamp I can replaced.
I have just replaced the capacitor on the signal (47uF electrolytics) with 22uF poliestere with bypass by wima red (0,33 uF) and also the resistor on the signal output with other (1% tollerance).
I want also replaced the capacitor and the power-supply: I have now 1 cap 4700uF 16v and 2 cap 3300uF 25v and other small cap. Is it possible replaced this cap with 3 4700uF electrolytics and bypass or there is another better solution?
And last question: Is it necessaty re-clock?

If somebody have experience with this cd player please help me.

Bye
Andrea

HI,

Have you tried getting info on the op-amp stuff. My marantz has some Harris op-amps, and they sound very good. (ha-5137)
These are military grade ones!!
You could replace the op- amps with ad845 or ad797. I'm sure there is another alternative from Intersil if you cannot find the
ha5137.

MARANTZ CD74

Hi,

I just upgraded a MARANTZ CD74 with NE5532 Signetics Dual Op Amps (exact pin match) by installing sockets on the boards.

The result is AWESOME - this CD Player now sounds just as good or better than any of the Bang and Olufsen CDX units I've restored.

Cheers,

There is one crystal beetwen saa7000 and 7030. The frequency clock is 4,2336Mhz.
I see some clock module (for example LCAUDIO) but there is not this frequency. What can I do?

Thanks

You could use an 8.4672MHz oscillator and deivide the output by 2 with a 74HC74 flip-plop.

Hi drews,

I have some experience with this CD player, I modified mine a lot. Just send me an email for more information, service manual etc.

Please tell us about your mods to the CD74........

Here are my mods:

1. http://tube.fw.hu/no_oversampling.pdf
2. Output opamp replaced to OPA627 (needs some PCB track cutting)
3. Output analog filter removed (see 2. and http://tube.fw.hu/defilter2.jpg)
4. Reclocking: http://tube.fw.hu/jitterkiller4.jpg (sorry for the poor picture, see PDF diagram above)
5. Electrolytic capacitors in the power supply replaced to same footprint, bigger capacitance
6. PSU diodes replaced to 3A Schottkies (1N5822 I think)
7. PSU stabilizers replaced to LM317Ts (needs additional resistors in the air)
8. Output coupling capacitor replaced to 4.7 uF/100 V WIMA MKS-4
9. Output cable replaced (initially with shielded, finally with twisted pair)
10. Better clock ckt on an external board, original Xtal moved to it (http://tube.fw.hu/internal.jpg)
11. C1 error flag SAA7020 pin 3 connected to a LED through a transistor driver, indicating correctable errors

Recently I bypassed the TDA1540Ps, and connected a TDA1541A on a piggyback PCB.

More recently I bypassed the OPA627 and currently I am using an external I/V circuit, but this is a different story... (see thread http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=100297)

I recommend starting the mods with the PSU board, that brought the biggest change in my case.

Yes - I was curious about that. I have some machines with 1541 and some with 1540 and they all sound nice....but different. It is difficult to do a direct comparisson as it is not just the dac chips that is different - so it is interesting to hear about your experience where you have swapped the dac chips.

Service manual request

I'm trying to restore some functions of a somewhat canibalised CD84 unit. It is playing fine, but lacks some of the important options (like the reset of the TOC - I need to use the power button for that :bawling: ).

If anyone has it, a copy of the Marantz CD-84 service manual would be most welcome.

Also, If You are in a sharing mood, a CDM1 sm is also very welcome :clown:

My mail is ______@hotmail.com – (just fill the blank space of the email adress with scorpioddmf).

Thx in advance! :wave2:

P.S. Please be advised, the attachment limit is 10mb, so if the file is bigger, please use the split option in Your archiving program
