Default The first part of my new transport

Just a quick thread to share my happyness !

I just bought this wonderful (and working) Philips CD101 .

I plan to use it as a transport and plug it to a DAC via the I2S output.

My question is :
What do you think is the best solution :
Build a great case for the CDM1 transport or leave it in its original case ( I love the its design).

My first idea was to take the transport off its case but it is really looking great and moreover the original case is so well build and heavy I think it will be fine.

Edit : By the way guess how much I paid for it ? 11,4 euros !!!

There's no way you could make a case that cool at home; there's even a graph of its frequency response. Leave it as it is!

Actually - you'll probably find there a several boards wired together inside. Given its age, these get a bit twitchy if you start playing inside/ moving the guts to a new case. It might never be the same again, so If it works, just enjoy it

You are unlikely to find I2S in a machine of that vintage. It doesn't even exist in the CD104.

That's right it doesn't exist but there are solutions.

See here :

CDM1 transport

And the cd-304 mkII use a CDM1 and a SAA7210 where you can take the I2S from so it means you can get I2S out of CDM1.

It will not be easy but this will be worth trying it to be able to plug the best ever made philips transport (CDM1) to a great DAC !

But you don't have a CD304 MK2, you a have CD101 and that may well mean the SAA70x0/TDA1540P chipset and that is something completely different.

open it and we'll see what chips are inside

before that, we can't take any conclusion

OK !

After some digging into the forum and into the web here is what I found :

CD101 uses SAA7000 / 7010 / 7020 / 7030 chips with 2xTDA1540 (14 bits DAC)

After all my research I2S is not possible

BUT...

It seems possible to interface SAA7000 and TDA1541A

SAA7000 can output 16 bits on left channel and right channel (DLCF and DRCF) in offset binary format.

On the other hand TDA1541A accepts dual channel input (pin 3 and 4)
in offset binary format.

Everything seems great. Just have to try and hope the formats are the same ! I am betting they are because of one sentence in the TDA 1541A Specs :
"The flexible input data format allows easy interfacing with signal processing chips such as interpolation filters, error correction circuits, pulse code modulation adaptors and audio signal processors"
I am sure they made it compatible with their earlier circuits It's good to hope !

Apparently Happy Ears did succeed last year (see the url I posted earlier)

What do you think of that ?

So let's try it !
My only fear was that the format would not have been in offset binary format !
Apparently according to your post it is.

I will try that and report here !

Anyway thank you all for your help

Last question : do you think the path between SAA7000 and TDA 1541A should be very short (so it means internal DAC) or it can be longer (external) ?

You could send the signals to an external TDA1541A via a buffer but if there is enough space inside I wouldn't bother.
