Proceed I. PS Audio Lamda transport, Goldmund, MARANTZ CD 72 MK2 "Special Edition"
Found this on Hifi.nl
"I know I should have been already home now, but I take an extra moment to give an usefull tip here. A tip we often give to customers visiting us: if you buy a cd-player, specially if it is an expensive one, buy at the same time a laserhead for possible future repairs. It's better to make a small investment for a laserhead than discovering at a certain moment that these are not available anymore or extremely expensive. Think of the Philips CDM9-Pro which was used very often in expensive high-end machines. For people who have a problem because they cannot get a CDM-9Pro anymore, we might have a solution by the way. Contact us about that."

No cheap CDM9 pro players...

Hi all

I have gone through this mission with my Theta Data as well as a friends unit.

Theta, Audiolab, Rotel (never seen myself but I trust the source who told me), PS Audio (made for them by Theta, different face and tray location) I think Marantz on the CD23 but I doubt the CD72, that is CDM4 I think. Several other high end type companies used the 9 pro. No mass market co has used this mech except Sherwood and Rotel and they were far from their entry level units that used it.

Arcam, Philips Rotel RCD970 and the naim units used the std 9.

If you have a laser problem, then just swap the swing arm and laser from a 9/44. Herman again deserves some credit here...
If you have a motor or spindle problem, you have a problem as this is the main difference between pro and others....... I have a spare motor (no spindle though) but you would have to threaten my life to make me part with it.
The 44 spindle motor shaft is also thinner then the pro so you can not swap spindles either.

What is wrong with the player you are trying to repair? If the laser is flakey on this drive, sometimes the motor does not spin to read toc. It made me think I had a faulty motor. Since the laser swap I have had no more grief, nor has my friend. Be aware that there are lower quality cdm9/44 units sold out there. One unit I got had no philips sticker anywhere and would not read CDRW but seemed fine otherwise, my philips branded unit does without a problem!!!

Guillaume
