Default DVD-A Question

Can you modify a single disc DVD player that does not play DVD-A discs, to the one that plays DVD-A discs? If so, what does it take?

Not easy.

You need software in the player's DSP to decode the MLP data, which implies buying a license from Meridian Audio.

There are some very cheap computer DVD based players which are capable of playing DVD-A, and it might be an interesting project to mod one of these players for decent sound quality.

I'd go farther and say it's virtually impossible - MLP hasn't been cracked, so the only possible way would be to get a chipset that already decodes MLP, at which point the question becomes 'why bother' since that would have to come from a working player.....

There are some very cheap and fairly well regarded DVD-A capable players out there like the Toshiba 3950/3960 and now 4960, or some Pioneers - you'd be way ahead of the game to just start from one of these.
