Question regarding discrete I/V converters [ for TDA1543]

I am at present considering active iv conversion circuits for my portable TDA1543 dac ,it currently uses a passive system.

I have looked at some of the various discrete designs here, but
would have no idea how to adapt them to function on low quiescent current/supply voltages,[or even if it would be viable] as I have no experience with discrete transistor design.

The discrete approach caught my eye ,as it is my understanding that the traditional opamp solution is less than ideal.

At present the dac runs from an 8cell 1500mah nimh battery pack.
The 1543 supply voltage is 8v and complete dac draws about 80ma.
Is a discrete solution practical with the above supply limitations
without upping current consumption too much?

I would be grateful for any views on the above , as at present
I am trying to find a solution to concentrate on, that will
suit my projects power/space constraints and provide
a technical improvement over the passive approach.
I am of course assuming that a more accurate iv conversion
would result in a more enjoyable sound with this dac.
