I really like Marantz CD5000. Nice sound, looks good, and is in the price range. Listen to it if you can.

IMO you are better with a dedicated CD player (if your main source is CD's) as most DVD players don't do CD's extremely well. There are exceptions of course but most of those a mega bucks. Found it cheaper and better to have a CD player as well as a DVD player.
There are less CD players being released now with the onslaught of DVD but some manufactures are still looking after the CD only market. It's a pity that Sony is not releasing any affordable CD players (ES series aside) as they have had some beauties in the past. Have an old CDP990 from 1990 which is a cracker and it's true that they don't build them like this anymore. Another one to add is the Rotels which are based on a Sony transport and built like a brick sh!thouse and have quality components inside where it counts. My 2 cents. |

I would recommend both NAD and Rotel players. They are very similar players, both using Burr-Brown DAC's, which in my experience with my NAD T770 reciever (which has 18bit DACs) these DACs sound just fantastic. I'm sure you'll be completely satisfied with any product by either of these companies.

Do you know if a laser head that reads DVD density can be fitted on that Sony player? |

I have been investigating about the NAD C521BEE and looking at all its features and have heard it is a very good CD player based on the quality components used.
Another option to consider would be the Cambridge Audio 540C or 640C.

i have no absolutely idea...
asuuming you could find a "drop-in" substitute, i'd imagine you'd have all kinds of fun coming up with something to read the data, though. Quote:

Yes, I'm assuming an external DAC to use with these old players but the firmware to drive the head might be a problem
