CD 17 Intermittent CD reading?

Firstly, when I insert a CD (including CDR) it does not read the TOC then after several times of using the random function on the remote then I can get it to play
Can someone tell me if the laser pick up is worn? Cleaning the lens does not help much...within a few days its back to square one.

I think the mechanism is the VAM 1201. Do I need to change this if so can I replace the above with a better mechanism.

I did find out that the optical pick up is the
CDM12.1 = VAM1202.12 If anyone could please tell me if there is a better mechanism than the above for the CD17, where in I don't have to do any kind of modifications.
