I bought one of his players. Picked it up myself. Experienced some trouble with connecting the powersupply. Well what can I say... Holger Stein responds usually very quick to my e-mails. Fried my display anyway So my player is now back to Holger for repairs. CDM 12 sounds great. Actually it sounds better than my upgraded Marantz cd-80.

I guess that is US$? Isn't it 138Euro at Steinmusic?

Now that is hard to believe for me. There must have gone something wrong while modding the CD80.
The CD-80 sounds better after te mod (opa627 and faster rectifier diodes) But on my set (Pass Aleph 5, Thel preamp and Alcone AC8HE with Dynaudio D-260 in a 75 liter enclosure) the CDM 12 sounds very good. I mean really very good! I payed about 910 Euro for the CD-80 12 years ago. I payed 189 euro for the CDM 12 last year. Comparing price/prestation the CDM 12 is a great CD player. Of course there are differences, but they are small. I also bought the upgrade for the CDM 12. Since the CDM 12 sounds so good, the upgrade must bring even more.

Mine has less capacitance as it was requested by the previous purchaser (keep cost down). It has only been used on the carpet not nounted and it was a definite improvement on my moded marrantz cd67II.
will say though that it would be hard work to put it a nice case, thats the main reason me and the previous owner didnt finish this project.

Any other comments?
yes you want to buy it
Im really not so good at describing sound sorry, but I hope for 200 it wont dissapoint.
Because a CDM12 also sounds very good for less than half the cost of a working CD PRO. The CDM 12 can be modified (with an upgrade kit from Steinmusic) untill your head falls of and still it is cheaper than a CD PRO. It can also be modified in a top-loader so you can make a heavier platform (like the cd-pro...)

My conclusion is that both available diy players are very nice. For me the CDM 12 is technically speaking a little bit easier. And if cost are a consideration: the CDM 12 is the better choice. Take it from me: It is a good sounding player for little money. I like it better than my CD-80 although Jean Paul finds that hard to believe. Maybe it's a matter of taste. I'm happy with my CDM 12.
