Make sure you have it connected correctly.

For 2 channels plus sub, set it to Auto Format Decode (AFD), and be sure Subwoofer=yes in the setup menu. It also would be good to use a digital connection from the cd/dvd player so that the receiver won't do another conversion. Is it possible that your subwoofer is broken? You can test it by (temporarily)plugging it into the rec out.
