Default which is a better spdif-to-cmos converter?

Here are 2 slightly different designs of the spdif to cmos converter, both using unbuffered inverters, taken from this forum. If we incorporate Fred's suggestions of configuring the inverter for a gain of ~25 for the second design, and then compare it to the first design, which one would be the better design, technical wise and sound wise?

Default 2nd design

insert 2k resistor in series with c2, and change r1 to 50k.

In my experience, the first one works better. But if you ask Jocko he will throw up due to the diodes.

Of course, he won't like #2 either.
