How do I identify the muting circuit in my CD player?
I opened it and there are 2 relays (I think) and 2 Wima caps on the output stage just before the RCA connectors. Is it better to remove this? I know that people have suggested to remove the muting transistors in the Marantz 6000 OSE. Thanks for the reply. Jayel |

Relays are normally considered fine. Transistors are bad news.

Hello jarthel,
In my experience relays DO do damage, or at least alter the audio output. To prove this, add a wire (wires) to short across the relay signal contacts, and then alternately connect or isolate the relay coil connection. IME you get two (slightly) different sounds. Also try this with amplifier output protection relay. Conclusion - the coil current induced magnetic field has an audible effect. Regards, Eric. PS - The cdp output relays (muting) are not strictly neccesary if you remember to turn down the volume control as is appropriate. |
