Default How does this sound for a signal path?

I'm trying to get my electronic items worked out before I start searching for plans to build stuff. Keep in mind this is my first home audio/diy experience so bear with me.

My plan is to get a pre-amp that can control 3-4 stereo sources, and has the ability to mix in a subwoofer with crossovers (switch the sub in, sub gets included LPed, and my main towers get HPed). Along with the stereo inputs goes 6.1 analog inputs, for home theater.

Then, connected to this will be
a. most likely my computer
b. a standalone cd player (I already have one)
c. a standalone tuner
d. possibly a turntable (I'll build around this accordingly, as I'm aware it has some different requirements)
e. a DVD player that does it's own processing, and outputs 6.1 analog.

On the pre-amp would have various switches for turning the subwoofer on/off, volume controls for level matching the surround sound, etc etc.

The amps are probably going to be gainclones (going to start with just 2, I won't have home theater for a while)

Is this a good way to go? Keeping the pre-amp all analog like that seems like it would be easier/less complicated to build, especially for a newbie. I'm not overly concerned with the analog 6.1 over better options, since my main goal is high quality stereo sound.

Or would I be better off doing something else? Like maybe just building a 2.1 pre-amp for now, and then worry about how I'm going to incorporate 6.1 home theater when I obtain the other parts?

I don't mind rebuilding/upgrading, but I dont' want to waste too much money on "middle" parts, hence why I'm trying to just skip the receiver stage altogether.
