Hi all,
I'm really a noob in digital audio.. I've read appr 15 pages of threads with keyword I2S here in diyaudio.com but couldn't find an answer. I've ordered this kit: cd rom controller and going to build this: TDA1541 DAC What cdrom would I use? Have you found the I2S from any cdrom? TIA Best regards, Pete

Hello,
I haven't heard of any CDROM that outputs I2S (or IIS), you are most likely to find a SPDIF digital out. Using SPDIF you'll need a digital receiver (such as the CS8412) to drive a TDA1541A. In case the CDROM already uses a I2S DAC you can tap the signal but you have to open it and see... Cheers Andrea |

Thank for posting, Andrea!
OK, I'll open an old cdrom and try to find the signal... Cheers!

Hello,
be aware though that there are many DAC vendors, so if unless you're very lucky you will have to use the SPDIF interface. In any case.. good luck! Cheers Andrea |

Hi Andrea,
I'm going to built The "ZERO" dac by Alessandro Galavotti. I have a tube preamp, I'll use it to drive the dac. please visit Mr. Galavotti's page. There is the schema. "using Cd-pro mechanism that already gives I2S outputs allows us to spare clocking components (CS8412) reducing to the lowest all jitter problems." Best regards, Pete

I was referring to the internal CDROM DAC... if it uses a I2S DAC you can tap these signals out, otherwise (i.e. Sony/BB format or others) the TDA1541 won't work. I know A. Galavotti's design, the key factor is that he uses a CD-PRO mechanism from Philips that outputs IIS signals. So you might be able to find such signals on Philips CDROMS but since Philips itself uses other data formats also (TDA1545, TDA1543A) this is not guaranteed at all. Cheers Andrea |
