Default Nakamichi mb-4s

Hey everyone,

Just curious whats the sound quality like on the Nakamichi mb-4s it's a 1994 model. I found one at the goodwill for $14.99. Anyone know what the DA converters are?

I can't find much info on it.

Thanks

Hi xxllmm4,
That was the bottom model of that series, but they all sounded pretty good. It's a Nak after all.

So, for $15 you are worried about the D/A converter? I used to fix them under warranty, but I can't remember what D/A is in that one. I can tell you that the audio path after the DAC is better than the average player.

The complete d/a DAC converter list - DutchAudioClassics.nl

I'm curious about this type of DAC so your thoughts on how it sounds would be interesting seeing as you've now got one.

Hi percival007,
I have found that the DAC chip(s) used ae only the first step in sound quality. The next important pieces of the puzzle are the filtering and data error correction, and the analogue circuits after the DAC. I have heard PCM1702 systems that sound unappealing, and yet the TDA1540 DACs in the Nakamichi OMS-7 sound really good. Far better sound than they should have. (14 BIT DAC).

So true, ^^ and the power supply would even make more of a difference before the actual ic used most of the time...
