logic gates and spst

i want to create effectors for my guitar.
i built a distortion circuit.
its sweet.
now i need a dpdt switch.
i cant get a pedal dpdt switch for several reasons, so i thought of something else.
a simple digital system that can use an spst bottun to a dpdt switch.
it has 4 modes
1. spdt closed. effect off.
2. spdt open. effect on
3. spdt closed. effect on.
4. spst open. effect off.
etc.

in other words, the spst is turns circuit on , and when pressed second time turns circuit off.

unfortunatly, my knowledge in logic gates, and electronics generally, is limited, so i couldn't find a circuit that can do this.
ive been schetching for a while now.

plz, HELP.
thx

glad to help,

but again a hint. You may wish to hold the gates low or high with some resisters untill you close the switch.
