Default micromega optic bs

purchased a supposedly working unit, with transport locks, it showed up and right off the bat it didn't look good. The locks were left in the holders and not inserted into the transport!

when I insert a disc the error led illuminates and no track list is shown, the disc does spin.

when I select a track and press play I can hear slight clicking sounds inside the machine, its a CDM-4/19

anybody have any ideas?

is finding another working player with the same transport and swapping it feasible?

Did you open and inspect the unit? Optic/Digit is a fairly simple machine. Assuming that you were sent a working CD player, you should look for any obvious nicks and cracks, both inside and outside, loose or detached flat cables and connectors. Pay close attention to the laser mechanism: does the swing arm move freely, does the turntable rotate smoothly, is the flat cable healthy.
Then, with the lid open, try inserting a CD and observe how the transport behaves when you press PLAY. You should see the lens bobbing up searching for a reflective surface where it expects it to be, the swing arm should move to the initial groove and the disc should spin then for TOC readout. This is the initial sequence which you should confirm happening. I think that getting another working player at this moment is too early because the fault may be simple and easy to fix, before you end up with two identical and working ones.

hi willi studer, yes it works exactly as you say, arm is free, lens goes up and down. I hoped it was a dead laser so I found another cdm4/19 and swapped it in and it still says error, will not read toc

As a general rule, never swap transports straightforwardly because you always risk killing the second transport, too, in case a deadly fault lies outside it. Your finding is actually good because it may indicate that the transport is actually fine. I would suggest closely inspecting the player for obvious mechanical/connection problems caused during transport. Does the disc spin up?
