touch LCD + player OS combo what works

Hello,
I want to make an inet radio + network music player based on raspberry pi. With this player I want quick boot and local LCD display to be able to quickly switch on while we have breakfast in the morning and switch off as we leave.
I have a 3.5" display, but I can not get it working with volumio, rune, moode. It works fine with raspbian, but that boots for long time, needs shutdown and has other problems. I see I should buy another LCD, but I do not know which.
I want small display. Not a PDA size display, maximum a phone size.

Can you recommend a display and OS combo what works without much hacking in the OS ?
