Default 'Wifi Direct' Audio Streaming

Currently I have SoundWire Server installed on my PC, and SoundWire App installed on my Android phone.
This arrangement allows me to play music on my laptop using say, Foobar player, and send that audio to my Android phone via the house router/wap...and highly recommended.

However, is it possible to perform the same function, but without need for the router/wap...ie stream audio from PC to phone directly ?.

Thanks, Dan.

No, Bluetooth is a lossy compressed data format and not suitable for my needs of hifi audio transmission.

Sure. It is possible to create a wifi connection directly between a smartphone and a computer with a Wifi adapter.

Why?

The utility for anything other than portable use may be limited.

Mini routers with audio outputs like these allow to setup a hotspot wifi network which allow streaming using protocols like Airplay or DLNA.

They also seem to work as wifi expanders. Never tried though.

D-link also has a similar device. Don't know if can be used as hotspot or repeater only.

Looks like stuff like this will become widely available in a very near future, standalone or embedded into wifi speakers...
