Two things to look at.
Are the ribbon cables correctly seated?
Was the E-bay (Chinese) laser faulty from new? Quite a few have been!

Have you tried cleaning the lens?

Hi Henry,
I hate to say it, but this is a technician type job only. Your results do not surprise me one bit. There is a lot to do with a head than just plunk it in there! Old techs make it look easy, but that's because you don't see everything that goes on between their ears.

Where are you located? You need to use a good audio technician now. Not a TV tech, not a car stereo tech, a real good home audio technician.

Don't do anything, not a damn thing. You might easily make this even worse now. If you don't want to see a good technician, may as well give it away, or burn it up in a fire. Either way, chances are heavily against you being able to use it again.

Easily true. Take the "new" head in with the CD player and tell them exactly what you have done so far.

Hello Chris The cd was taken to a audio tech in Livingston who changed the lazer assembly,He reckond in might be the servo, in the dark without a service manual.Such a good player shame to part with it will hang on a .little longer

Regards Henry(if it dont work hit it with sledge hammer)

CD17 Ki is a nice player. Why don't you take it to Marantz authorized service? It would be a shame to see it start gathering the dust. You will pay around $200 - $400 or maybe more (200 - 300 quid), but I think it would be worth it if they can get it working again, which they should without too much hassle.
