Hi
I just came across nice Philips CD650 player (have never had this one). This is TDA1541 , SAA7220P/A , SAA7210P I have some spare TDA and SAA chips. I know TDA1541 is interchangable for A version. Now can I just drop SAA7220P/B in place of SAA7220P/A version or I have to change some circuit components? I'm not sure (used SEARCH but couldn't find it) but I think somebody mentioned something about getting rid of some cap,but I might be wrong. Also what advantage would bring changing SAA7210P for A version? Are those direct replacements? Thanks for your answers Bartek |

Hi,
Swapping the componetns for the newer ones should bring improvements, however there is a post here where somebody 'complains' a 650 is better sounding than a newer philips with cd1mk2 7220B and 1541A. So dunno if it is a good idea. Search for 650 here, there's enough said about this player and what you could do with it. If you send me a pm for the schematics. GuidoB

Thanks for all your kind answers.
I have some expirence in those old Marantz/Philips players but I have never had CD 650. I have a nice set of Marantz CD 65II (three of them). One of them is my current player.I'm using it with Kwak Clock 7 and Thorsten's OPA660 I-V.Also it was equipped with CDM 4/19 but I managed to adopt CDM1/MKII to this player (quite a diffrance, probably brushless motor). The main board is probably the same as in higher model that use CDM1/MKII so mounting holes and motor drive are same. Also I have S1 chip in this player. OK. I just bought CD650 today,as I said. This one has CDM2/10 ,pretty much CDM1/MKII but with plastic chassis. Also laser lens looks diffrent (I have to try wheather CDM4/19 is a direct replacement as in case of CDM1/MKII). I compared it to stock Marantz CD65MKII ,boy that is the diffrance! Philips is much better. What I did: I just removed muting transistors. Put BB2604 OP-AMPs. Changed TDA1541 for "A" version and I must say it almost matches my modded Marantz.I wonder what makes a diffrance, better grounding ,or PS? I haven't even exchanged electrolitics caps. I'm wondering what is the sonic diffrance between TDA1541 and TDA1541A. Tomorrow I will buy some DIP's and try to switch between them.I will also check sonic diffrance between SAA7220P/A and P/B version.I will report my findings ,soon Guido I will send you an e-mail asking for schematics. Also S1 version sounds better that plain TDA1541A. Haven't tried SAA7220P/B yet Bartek |
