Another CS8412/TDA1543 project..ToRX help.

I interested in developing one of these nos 1543 dacs for use with
a portable CD player.
I will also want to listen with my stax system as well.

The threads on these units and the nos approach are both fascinating and confusing.

Not really sure where to start, so I thought I would give
Fedde's Nonos 3 a go.
Though I do find myself interested in active IV conversion rather than
passive, based on the haze of information about them I have read
here, Better sounding, more output??

I will also need a ToRX module to connect a toslink to the receiver.
Am I correct in thinking that just simply connecting one to the cs
8412 inputs is not the best approach in implementing these units?
I have hazy recollection of reading about differential drivers or
some such.

I realize you hardened campaigners out there are continuing your quest to refine this 8412/1543 dac as I have been reading the threads!
But for a newb it is looking into a private conversation between
highly experienced people and much of it zooms straight over my head

I have no expectation of a spoon feed as such, but some guidance on how to best implement the ToRX receiver would be appreciated .

I can then at some point blunder on and see what sort of noise
one of these units makes after I have put one together

Hi,

good luck ! If you download my ddda1543 circuit pdf document, you will find how to connect the torx. In my humble opinion, the difference is not so significant as you would think.... I use them both and the both sound excelent. Also in my previous dac I used both. My be it has to do with the reclocking I do, that the effect of optical or coax is somewhat softened ?

Thanks.
It was discovering your website that sparked my curiosity with
this DAC process in the first place .
I will implement the ToRX as you suggest.

I really have no idea what to expect from this project, as I read
many conflicting opinions re the nos approach.
My initial implementation will be without re-clocking and probably with an OPamp based IV conversion method.
As I have many 1543s [less receivers though£££] I can construct
and number of versions for comparison.

Scanning the various threads here ,there seems to be a whole lot of things to test out re,regulators,caps etc.

I appreciate a portable CD source will have high jitter issues so
I would imagine re-clocking could be of advantage here?

What are your views on circuit approach for prototyping?
I had intended to socket the chips and construct the circuit on
a matrix board of sorts.
But I have since read that sockets are not a good idea for digital
chips.
I downloaded a 'paper' from AD regarding layout and best practices etc and the approach to such prototypes they recommended was to 'air wire' the circuit and have it connected to a ground plane in the form of a copper clad board but 'hovering above it.[I hope my description makes sense!]

I think one of my main handicaps [amoungst others] at the moment is lack of test equipment ....I have no Scope! ...flying blind

Anyway thanks again for your input, I look forward to the fun times ahead learning about this stuff.

If you want to compare various DAC stages why don't you just feed multiple TDA1543s with the same signals and then switch between different output stages? This way you can have real-time comparison with the same signal and with no need for other receivers!
