Post Pioneer PD-S501 Mod.

My Suggestion for a "basic" Pioneer PD-S501 tweak

components showed in paranthesis indicates these components,
are placed in par. with the Cxxx on the soldering side of the board

Main Power-Supplies:

D11,D12,D13,D14 change to 1N400x series (1Amp diode)

C25 10.000F/16V- (+ 1F/63V- Wima MKS-3 + Philips 1nF/250V- 1% polyprop.)
C26 6.800F/16V- (+ 1F/63V- Wima MKS-3 + Philips 1nF/250V- 1% polyprop.)
C27 1.000F/16V- (+ 47F/16V- + 1F/63V- Wima MKS-3 + Philips 1nF/250V- 1% polyprop.)
C28 1.000F/16V- (+ 47F/16V- + 1F/63V- Wima MKS-3 + Philips 1nF/250V- 1% polyprop.)
C52 220F/40V-
C60 1F/63- Wima MKS-3

DAC Local Supply:

C413 1F/63V- Wima MKS-3 (+ 100nF/63V- + Philips 1nF/250V- 1% polyprop.)
C414 1F/63V- Wima MKS-3 (+ 100nF/63V- + Philips 1nF/250V- 1% polyprop.)
C415 1F/63V- Wima MKS-3 (+ 100nF/63V- + Philips 1nF/250V- 1% polyprop.)
C416 1F/63V- Wima MKS-3 (+ 100nF/63V- + Philips 1nF/250V- 1% polyprop.)
C421 1F/63V- Wima MKS-3 (+ 100nF/63V- + Philips 1nF/250V- 1% polyprop.)

Hint. the original 100nF caps could be re-used

Analog Stage (IC405):

Remove original Op-Amp (and clean its leads use it for testing later on)
next add DIL-8 socket at IC405 location
suggestion for which type of op-amp to use (for real) comes later

Local supply:

C431 100F/16V- (+ 1F/63V- MKS-3 + 100nF/63V- + Philips 1nF/250V- 1% polyprop.)
C432 100F/16V- (+ 1F/63V- MKS-3 + 100nF/63V- + Philips 1nF/250V- 1% polyprop.)

Muting/volume/signal path:

Q403 remove (muting)
Q404 remove (muting)
Q453 remove (volume)
Q454 remove (volume)

C433 Use polypropylene cap. min. 4.7F
C434 Use polypropylene cap. min. 4.7F

R443 100KOhm
R444 100KOhm
R445 0 Ohm
R446 0 Ohm
R461 0 Ohm
R462 0 Ohm

notice R445,R446,R461,R462 only short if Q453,Q454 is removed.

Ill suggest to use selected MP 1% resistors for:

R427 22KOhm
R428 22KOhm
R429 22KOhm
R430 22KOhm
R435 22KOhm
R436 22KOhm
R437 22KOhm
R438 22KOhm
R439 43KOhm
R440 43KOhm
R441 43KOhm
R442 43KOhm
R447 470 Ohm
R447 470 Ohm

Decoder IC301 Local Supply:
C301 remove the original 100nF ceramic disc-cap
and replace it with 1F/63V- Wima MKS-3 (+ 100nF/63V- Wima MKS-3 +Philips 1nF/250V- 1% polyprop.)

System Controller IC351 Local Supply:
C351 (+ 1F/63V- Wima MKS-3 + Philips 1nF/250V- 1% polyprop.)

Now the basics is made

Now its time to select Op-Amp...seach the forums and get an idea which one to use...

Burr Brown OPA2604 a real good choice when you look at performance vs. expence

But my first recomendation goes for the LC AD8065 module type 3 op-amp http://www.lcaudio.dk/com/index.php?page=5

Regarding new clock..a lot of topics in this section of the forums

happy

sry. for bad gramatics/spelling etc

I have a PD-S504 and wonder if the S501 schamtics would be simullar, if so I would very much appreciate a copy.

Looking at my board, IC406 is a 5218A op-amp and IC405 is a 4558DD op-amp is this the same as on a S501?

Keep well all,

Will

Whoops!

Just noticed a little mistake in my list

R447 470 Ohm ~ R447 470 Ohm
R447 470 Ohm ~ R448 470 Ohm

wreeve

I have compered the the PD-S501 and PD-S502 schematics.......few changes but essential enough......for instance an regulated power-supply is missing/left out in the PD-S502.
Futher more the board layout is also diffirent.

I think it would be a good idea for you to get a PD-S504 scematics.........if you get one?

i could make a list for that on to

Default prototype

Your not going to believe this, but I actually have a prototype of the pioneer pd-S501... only mine doesn't actually have the pioneer name on it. It just says pd-S501. The guy I got it from works at an electronics manufacturer.. they also make high end stuff for wadia. This player has been very good to me and has never given me any problems... only complaint..... no power button on the remote.... oh yeah... it actually has a wadia remote too. I just might have to dig into this thing sometime and see what's in there
