CS8414 v 8412

Elliott (Counterpoint Service) suggests replacing DACs with CS8412 with 8414 for improved sound. Anyone tried this?

CS8412 replacement

I replaced the CS8412 by the CS8414 in my Counterpoint DA-10 and the result are very impressive.
The problem is the different format (I use an Adapter SOIC to DIL) and this chip is difficult to find in Europe.

CS8414 vs. CS8412

Hi Josep,
Very interesting! Did you use the "Wildmonkeysects" loopfilter on the CS8412? What are the differences in sound between the CS1812 & 8414? Could you elaborate on that?
Never thought the CS8414 was better on redbook CD's (44.1 kHz sampling frequency)

Elso,

I dont know how loopfilter is implemented in my DA-10,
I only changed the receiver and the the result are more detail, better bass and sound more natural and musical.

I am a bit puzzled by the advice of Mike Elliot as the loopfilter for the CS8414 is different from the loopfilter of the CS8412! After exchanging the IC the loop filter should be modified too!

Josep I envie you for being the owner of a DA-10. Very nice piece of equipment.

Different designers/manufacturers use different values, presumably optimised. Why call it loop filter?

It is a low pass filter for the PLL (Phase Locked Loop) of the CS8412 or 8414; hence the name loopfilter.

Sound of CS8414 vs CS8412 on "Redbook" CD's

Hi Josep,
I just compared the CS8414 with the CS8412 in my NON-OS KWAK-DAC. (AD1865N-K).
I can <B>NOT</B> confirm your findings; on the contrary bass is slightly less with the CS8414. But the other attributes you described are very similar to the CS18412.
