Default Rigging a Portable CD player

Hi everybody,

I have 2 older CD/MP3 players. One is an Audiophase DM9118 and the other is a Rio SP50. I don't use them anymore, and was wondering, is there a way to rig a hard drive or a flash memory card to it in place of the laser to make them into true MP3 players? I would think that all it would need is something to read the hard drive, convert it to the format the laser puts out, and send it back to the CD player.

Is this possible to do?

Thanks, Mike

In a word no, IMO.

You certainly can't convert to the laser signal, as it has all sorts
of control stuff in it for tracking the CD, the wanted signal is also
spread around the CD using Reed Solomon Encoding.

OK, well thanks anyway. I figured that the cd players are no longer in use and a HDD player would be nice

you would be better off looking up the chips inside or somehow figuring out how the data off the cd makes it to the mp3 decoder. but by the time you have done this you would be much better off looking into one of the many chips out there for mp3 decoding and then using a microcontroler to interface with the hard drive
