I'm no expert but i'm going to say yes. I built an isolator box so i could power USB dacs from an external supply as i found the +5v from the usb port very noisy when viewed on a scope. There is also the issue of fluctuating voltages, especially if another USB device (i.e. memory key) is reading/writing at the same time.
