Hi,

I have a Sony CD player using a KSS 213d pickup...After inserting a CD, the pick up does not move at all, no attempts to focus, no homing...

The motor works fine in both directions when manually applying 5v to it.

Before I change it out for a new one, just wanted some thoughts if it could be the logic board not sending out a signal, and if so how to test it. No ocilloscope, only a multimeter.

Also if any other pick ups are interchangable.

Thanks in advance,

JJ

If you replace the pickup with like for like, there is no problem. They come from Sony set up and no need to adjust them. However, before you purchase a replacement, there is a sequence of events that the system board carries out.
1/ Door sensor contacts closed
2/ Move assembly to TOC position
3/ Power up laser
4/ Power up spindle motor
5/ Attempt to achieve focus.

If the laser assembly is moved away from the centre TOC position and then powered up with the draw closed, the laser assembly will move to the TOC position.

The spindle motor runs on about 15mA which should be about 2volts.
