Hi,
I am looing for a small, simple, 24bit DAC kit to build into a CDPRO2 project. I found a kit in Malasia (http://www.octave-electronics.com/Kits/dac.shtml) based around the PCM1716. Looking at the specs, it has higher THD and noise figures than some of its competitors, but I know that can mean very little. Does it sound good? Thanks, Ed |

The PCM1716 appears to be your standard issue delta-sigma DAC, nothing special about the specs, and probably nothing special about the sound. Sometimes lower spec'd DACs with the R2R topology are said to sound better than delta-sigma DACs that measure better, but this isn't an R2R DAC.

If I am not completely mistaken, this is a HDCD chip only available to OEMs with a HDCD licence. I had a Harmon changer with this chip that sounded so uninspired that I returned it. I cannot say whether this is due to the DAC or the implemenation.

That is the PCM1732. The PCM1716 is a standard 24/96 capable dac.

Arcam Diva 72 has one and just a few minutes listening after warming up was enough for me. Good, no more than that.
